Erin Napier Shared the Best DIY For Cheap Planters on ‘Home Town’

If you’re like us, you’re still thinking about the Home Town makeover that Ben and Erin Napier did for Debbie and Greg Ewen (remember the kitchen with Ben’s incredible island?). Their efforts resulted in an incredible makeover of a home decorated in 1980s finery, but we need to take a moment to talk about the house’s exterior—namely, Erin’s super-creative DIY project.

As Ben and Erin wrapped up renovations, they found themselves in need of a solution for the front porch. Their initial plan fell through due to logistics. They wanted to add wood brackets and a beam to up the cozy factor, but there wasn’t enough space.

Erin wanted to give the porch some presence and add some warmth with plants. In order to give the porch some height and color but without spending much money, she had to flex her creative muscles. She called in the help of her best friend Mallorie and her daughter to get the job done.

Instead of stone or terra-cotta planters that could cost hundreds of dollars, Erin came up with a faux stone idea. She paired a $25 plastic planter with a $15 bucket of joint compound to give it a stone look. They simply smeared it on the containers with putty knives and let it dry before adding plants. Erin noted that you could paint it after it’s dry.

We haven’t tried the project ourselves, but our crafts director notes that you may want to protect the pot from the elements so it doesn’t crack or flake off. Plus, you’ll want to make sure the pot has drainage holes and don’t cover them up with the joint compound!

If you missed the episode, you can see the stunning transformation on Max.
